The promise of socialism? Several million dead Soviets might beg to differ.
As I recall, the Left heaped scorn on the Right during the campaign for even daring to suggest that Barack Obama held socialist tendencies. Now, Newsweek triumphantly heralds it.

I bought this rag today just so I can cut and frame the cover and hang it in my office. I'm going to rub it in the faces of all of my "comrades" who said I was a right-wing nut job for daring to suggest that Obama is a socialist.

let's not forget the national socialism the the Germans installed during the challening 1930s.
I visited Split, Yugoslavia in 1984 when Tito still ruled the "Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia". Although part of the non-aligned pact of nations who took no side in the Cold War, they were nevertheless quite Soviet in the running of the country. For our visit, they had stocked their one and only department store, Koteks (I know, we snickered too) which they had gone out of their way to ensure we visited. The store at its admitted finest was about half as nice as a US inner city K-Mart on the final day of its Going Out of Business Sale. The people who visited our ship were apparently of gypsy heritage and were masterful thieves (apologies to any gypsy readers...no, not really, if you are gypsy and you can read this, bite me, your relatives took my navigation tools). I went back to Split, Croatia in 2004 and found a population that was as fit and cosmopolitan, fun loving and, to my witness, law abiding. Stores were booming and people looked genuinely happy. Picture black and white portion of Wizard of Oz then color (sans scary flying monkeys and wicked witches) and you'll have some idea of the contrast between socialist/autocracy Split and capitalist/democracy Split. I am curious whether they view Newsweek's pronouncement with the same profound disappointment as I do.
